Rock

April 26 -May 31, 2025 / Concept Gallery, Pittsburgh, PA

A solo show of handmade wallpaper, paintings, weavings, ceramics, and installation, Rock is an exhibition about the slipperiness of surfaces—how they shift, disguise themselves, and quietly record time. At its entrance, a hand-printed wallpaper installation set the tone: a screenprinted pattern based on an ink drawing of a weave, functioning like a veil or skin for the space, a drawing pretending to be fabric pretending to be a wall. Throughout the show, painted and printed linens—marked by rubbings from asphalt, concrete, rubble, and the vivid utility-paint codes of urban infrastructure—are woven together into tactile, rhythmic fields. Sculptures mimic rocks with varying degrees of conviction, and photographs of paint on asphalt anchor the work to its overlooked source material. Altogether, Rock reflects on land—what’s built on it, hidden under it, and altered by human systems—inviting viewers to read the world through its layered residues.

In Beck’s hands, her work becomes a metaphor for the interconnectedness of all things. She challenges conventional notions of place and representation while deftly juxtaposing the gradual passage of time with the immediate impressions left upon the surfaces she (re)configures. Through her varied practice, Beck invites viewers to contemplate the transient nature of existence and the enduring beauty that lies beneath/on/above the surface of our everyday lives.
